This one goes out to the ones who need it simple. Selecting enjoyable workouts and workout partners is not art, or even science. It’s a passive benefit that comes when you spend time browsing internet self-help articles.
If you don’t love it, don’t waste time on it!
There are so many different ways to move and stay physically engaged that the only reason you haven’t found exercise you like, is that you’re being too lazy to search! Tsk, Tsk. Go punch bags, run in circles, jump over rope, avoid drowning, I can do this all day, but the point is there’s something for you. I actually want you to aim low so that the barrier to entry is as small as possible. Remember, consistency is key to regaining your fitness and looking like you did in your late 20s. Let the early 20s go, they aren’t coming back, but stick with me and we can get you your late 20s… most likely.
Your Philosophy: the Old East and Wellness
Let the rest of the world stress out over who said what, or which politician is going to destroy the country. Let those go, and drastically improve your chances of avoid depression meds. The old eastern mindset towards movement is that it paves the way out of worry. Your muscles and your mind both draw from the same pool to sustain activity. The more you use up your blood sugar while moving like it matters, the less excessive blood sugar your brain will have to run in circles around topics that you make no progress on! This isn’t just about physical shape; it's about having a six pack in your brain! Emotional stability is that thing that everyone is still faking if they aren’t moving. You can quote me on that. If they have no exercise, but look cool on the outside, they are fakers! But even they’ll eventually make it, once they start SOME kind of routine.Â

Put your near-sighted glasses on and seek partners who can put up with you for at least one workout. You benefit from having someone to keep you accountable, and they benefit from trying something new. I invited my friend and colleague Dr. Gary Tao of Tao Chiropractic. One of his main reasons for joining me was to change up his fixed movement patterns.
It’s good for flexing the friendship’s muscles too. You know you’re in a flow when you don’t have to fill silence with the workout partner! Pro tip, stay local! Building a community within a five mile radius ensures that you visit the auto mechanic far fewer times per year. We all love our long-distance and zoom friends (I married my long-distance girlfriend), but getting consistent is hard enough without putting Los Angeles Traffic in the way of your goals!
Navigating Through Seasons: Adapting Your Workout Routine Year-Round
After years of one weather pattern, living in Southern California now seems to mean experiencing different seasons throughout the year. Your routine can adapt to the weather conditions!. During warmer months, I head outdoors to the Rosebowll Aquatics Center, a very nearby public pool. If you have a friend with a pool, then I envy you; if you have your own pool, I don’t envy you, but encourage you to use it! When it gets cooler, I’m running the track at the Glendale Sports complex to the sounds of soccer players and cars on the freeway in the distance. There’s quite the view up there! When the weather is unbearably hot or cold, there always my weight pile for some kettlebell action!
Less Finicky Diets: Build a Greater Food Tolerance!
Really. When you move, your body becomes better able to utilize that abundance of gluten and other who-knows-whats you throw onto your daily plates. More meals, less squeals! In th picture to the side, you can see I had some Char Siu and a builder bar after our lap swim today. I have had plenty of workout meals that included no homemade food and for sure, it's not ideal, but your body can do a lot with very little. Trust the intent. When I get my own personal chef, I'll retire the processed protein supplements. Until then, I moderate frequently and intentionally.
